Job Description
To continually improve safety culture and performance for the Haile UG Project and its contractors by building, monitoring and supporting Safety Management Systems, Health Programs and assist in the continuous improvement of Emergency Preparedness and Response in order to protect our workmates from injury and harm.
Demonstrate a strong focus on Health, Safety and the Environment by:
- Complying with OceanaGold Health and Safety Policy and Environment Policy.
- Actively promoting safety awareness and environmental responsibility amongst company and contract personnel.
- Reporting all personal injuries and incidents and assisting with investigations.
- Actively supporting and participate in safety and environmental initiatives.
- Accepting accountability to ensure personal safety and the safety of others whilst protecting the environment.
- Monitor the reporting of workplace incidents and hazards to ensure effective risk mitigation is maintained.
- Undertake workplace inspections and audits to ensure site standards are being adhered to.
- Coordinate incident investigations that occur within area of control.
- Leading the Safety team in OHS compliance (regulatory and internal programs) through ongoing audits and inspections, focusing on continuous improvement as per Haile’s safety management system.

- Promote health, safety and environmental awareness in order to prevent injuries and/or damages
- Assist in the development, implementation and coordination of the organization’s risk management strategy
- Implement, support and audit relevant health and safety management systems across the organization
- Conduct Regular Department – Safety Section meeting/briefings
- Provide direction and guidance to the management team and employees on Health and Safety issues.
- Lead by example and promote best practice at all times with regards to safety at work in all areas
- Trains, develops, mentors and assists subordinates/trainees through career development & training plan
- Maintain a strong line of communication and reporting on progress to the Project Director and the operations group.
- Ensure compliance to statutory requirements and integrate applicable industry best practices.
- Liaises with government agencies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
- Prepare weekly/monthly reports on inventory management and communicate to all relevant stakeholders
- Produce statistical reports on safety performance in line with company and statutory requirements
- Exercise budgetary and variation control to ensure costs are not exceeded without proper authority.
- Ensure all relevant Application for Expenditure (AFE) under area of control are in place and up to date with the correct approvals in place prior to work being undertaken.
- Actively look for opportunities to implement cost savings without effecting safety, schedule or quality.
- Prepare and maintain an active register identifying all safety risks for the project.
- Ensure all activities within area of control are completed to the specifications nominated for the works being undertaken.
- Ensure all works under area of control are completed to a standard that is fit for purpose and meets the end users’ requirements.
- Monitor subordinates in their performance and direct their activities as necessary to ensure project requirements are achieved.
- Communicate regularly with all staff to ensure that goals and priorities are clearly understood and to promote a harmonious working environment.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
- Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the workday.
- Work will require underground underground and surface time, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
- Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in an underground/surface mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
Qualifications
- A high degree of computer literacy is required, with effective skills in MS products desired.
- Ability to interpret and disseminate technical safety information between internal and external stakeholders.
- At least five (5) years experience in a mining operation and/or mine safety work, leading operations focused teams in OHS, including planning, implementing and managing health and safety systems and Emergency Preparedness and Response.
- Strong leadership and management skills;
- Have an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the Mining Act and Regulations;
- Completed the Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training
- Developed and conducted OHS training modules;
- Familiar with internationally accepted health and safety standards
- Knowledge in incident investigation techniques and workplace inspections;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills including technical writing, facilitating meetings, giving presentations and the ability to influence and promote teamwork.
- Experience with INX would be highly regarded
- Accredited Safety and/or OHS Practitioner
- Diploma or Certificate in Health & Safety Management (or similar)
