Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground gold mine. A recent consent for the Waihi North Project, a new mine to be developed 6km north of the existing operation has provided a long term extension of mine life providing our 400 staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.


Job Description

On a casual basis, provide health and safety services and support to Waihi and Waihi North Project Operations and ensure site compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, regulatory authorities and OceanaGold’s Health, Safety and Environment Compliance Standards Manual.

Be proactive in the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and fitness for work program encompassing health surveillance, biomonitoring, fitness for work, injury management practices, workplace rehabilitation and fitness for work procedures.

Function within the scope of practice of Registered Nurses.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Health monitoring, Occupational Hygiene Sampling and Record Keeping

  • Conduct and monitor pre-employment, periodic and exit health assessments on all employees.
  • Execute the site’s annual occupational hygiene monitoring programme.
  • Manage and maintain the company health and hygiene electronic database Cority’
  • Ensure employees have appropriate access to healthcare services and these are utilised effectively.

Health and Well-Being Programs

  • Identify and implement health promotion strategies to optimise the health and wellbeing of the work force.
  • Collaborate with external providers and agencies for health and well-being programme development support and resources.

Injury Management, Fitness for Work and Workplace Rehabilitation

  • Assist with the injury management and workplace rehabilitation programme.
  • Conduct fitness for work testing including drug and alcohol testing, hydration testing.
  • Lead the evaluation and treatment of injuries and illnesses in an efficient and professional manner within the scope of practice and consistent with clinical nursing guidelines.
  • Assist departments with identifying, evaluating, and implementing return to work options for employees with restricted duty injuries or illnesses.
  • Assess implement and manage healthcare programs to improve health and facilitate the return to work of employees, maintain records/​reports and employee medical files.

Other

  • Carries out all other duties that may reasonably be required.
  • Carry out administrative functions (write reports, attend meetings and disseminate information, complete purchase and service orders) commensurate with role.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings, attend departmental safety/​toolbox meetings.
  • Coordinate the sites medical supply requirements.

Qualifications

  • New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current practicing certificate.

Requirement

  • Current NZ full driver license (ability to drive manual preferred).

Experience

  • Relevant qualification and/​or experience in occupational health and hygiene programmes.
  • Understanding of health and safety management systems.
  • Working knowledge of New Zealand Health & Safety Legislation, Codes of Practice, and the Privacy Act.
