Supporting Technical Assessments

Boffa Miskell Ltd | Waihi North Project | Terrestrial Ecology Values and Effects of the WUG | 22 June 2022 31 altitudinal ranges). Dr Lloyd’s modelled estimate for the total Coromandel Archey’s frog population is 54.8 million individuals (Lloyd, 2022). Survey teams have revisited sites with historic records and surveyed new sites within representative habitats and have found that Archey’s frog distribution and abundance is consistent with the assumptions used within the model (if not more widespread). In particular, this estimate is consistent with survey observations of an expected count of 2.05 frogs in a single 10 x10 m plot (taking into account detection probability). At present Archey’s frogs are classified as “At Risk – Declining’ with a population size of 2,000 – 20,000 (low confidence) and a population trend of declining at 10-50 % (Burns et al 2018). We note that whilst Dr Lloyd’s assessment is a modelled figure based on available data (including new survey data) extrapolated over an envelope of potential habitat, we consider on the basis of field observations that Dr Lloyd’s is estimate likely to be closer in order of magnitude to the actual population size than DOC’s published estimate of 5,000 – 20,000 mature individuals.
