24 Boffa Miskell Ltd | Pest Animal Management Plan | Wharekirauponga Compensation Package | 30 May 2022 NZAutoTraps AT220 trap has passed NAWAC testing for ship rats and possums. AT220 traps may be a good option to increase trap variety for rats, provide constant control between services, and to decrease ongoing servicing costs, especially when used with ‘smooth in a tube’ or ‘egg-mayo’ as a lure which drips out over several months. However, these traps are largely unproven (especially for rats) at landscape scale in many habitat types, so should be used on a trial basis or as their long-term efficacy becomes more widely proven they could be deployed. Other traps currently under development that may be incorporated into the trap network in future include the Hammerforce® rat and stoat trap and the Hammerforce possum trap® (both currently under development) and the CritterSolutions® mouse, rat, and stoat trap and CritterSolutions® possum trap which both have a species-specific AI trigger (both currently under development). These traps are all resetting. Goodnature® A24 trap for rats and stoats are not recommended for this project. They have passed NAWAC guidelines for both rats and stoats (but have not been tested for hedgehogs). However, Goodnature traps have not achieved sufficient knockdown of target species in many areas, including Pukaha Mount Bruce and Windy Hill Sanctuary on Great Barrier Island. These traps also have had issues reported with the lures clogging and thus not remaining effective at attracting target species. There are also concerns about risk to non-target species, some of which may be present at Wharekirauponga including kiwi and kaka. 7.2.2 Possums A range of kill traps have passed NAWAC testing for possums. Of these, traps suitable for use include: • Sentinel trap (a strong, lightweight trap used widely around New Zealand). • Trapinator (this trap is comparatively easy to set and offers an alternative to the Sentinel trap). • Flipping Timmy (this trap is a modified version of the Timms trap which meets NAWAC guidelines). • SA2 Kat trap (at selected locations to increase trap diversity, but which are away from residential areas where there is a potential for domestic cats to also be caught). • Warrior trap (recommended for contractor use only and not where volunteers may be servicing traps as it is comparatively harder more dangerous to set). • AT220 (as for rats above, these traps are largely unproven (especially for rats) at landscape scale in many habitat types, so should be used on a trial basis). Traps not proposed for use for possums include the Timms, Possum masters and SA Coni traps, which have all failed NAWAC testing and are not considered humane for killing possums. 7.2.3 Feral cats For targeting feral cats, only two traps have passed NAWAC guidelines for cats: • SA2 Kat traps and Timms traps. Note Timms traps have not passed NAWAC testing guidelines for possums, however they are effective for catching possums if present. Both of these traps can be set above the ground with a ramp or on the ground in
