Recorded line of the Ohinemuri - Waihi low level water race shown as ‘water race easement’ (source: Hooker 2003: Figure 2) East Waihi Waste Disposal Site (Baxter Road) A field survey was undertaken in this area by Jill Pierce in 1984 (Pierce J, 1984). Pierce identified a number of individual features, grouped into 11 sites. Subsequent investigations by New Zealand Historic Places Trust (now Heritage New Zealand) in1986 determined that the majority of these features were not archaeological in origin and were areas of natural slumping (McFadgen 1987, referenced in Barr C, 1997). This latter conclusion was supported by Cathryn Barr, who surveyed the southern part of the area in 1997 and identified no archaeological sites (Barr, C. 1997). Part of the area was also surveyed by Ray Hooker in 1997, who relocated some of the sites identified by Pierce, which he too considered to be the result of natural processes (Hooker 1997).
