Install Water Control Devices hydraulic connection, and tightening bar on the opposite end (see diagram below). The ball valves are 1/2 inch, 1 inch or 2 inch. These packers are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 48mm to 102mm. The following steps are used for the manual installation of Mechanical Torque Packers: ▪ Ensure the ball valve of the packer remains open at all times during installation to prevent the build up of pressure. ▪ Insert the packer approximately 2 metres into the hole or to where the water bearing structure is intersected and secure the packer by tightening the torque handle clockwise until it is firm and cannot be turned anymore. Tightening the handle expands the rubber cylinder providing a firm anchor for the packer (see diagram below). ▪ With the ball valve remaining open, attach a safety chain from the torque packer to the nearest rockbolt or anchor point. This is a precaution to prevent the packer from ejecting out of the hole if the water pressure build up is too great, once the valve is closed. ▪ Close ball valve and monitor for any water leaks. ▪ For all holes above shoulder height, hand installed mechanical packers are to be installed out of a work basket on an Integrated Tool (I.T.) Carrier, following the working at heights procedure. Figure: Tightening the torque handle to expand the packer in the hole. Mechanical packer, expanded in hole by turning of the torque handle.
