SECTION 2 Existing Environment 6 of Thames. The Mataura Stream and Walmsley Stream that bound the Willows Farm property to the north and south respectively, join the Ohinemuri River which then flows to the west through the Karangahake Gorge to ultimately discharge into the Waihou River. The majority of the WUG dual access tunnels traverses the Otahu surface water catchment. This is a smaller catchment by comparison being some 71 km2 in size. This catchment drains to the north east towards Whangamata and discharges via the Otahu River. Figure 3 shows the extents of the Waihou and Otahu surface water catchments.
