Waihi North Project Preliminary Site Investigation (Ground Contamination) Williamson Water & Land Advisory Limited 1 1. Introduction Williamson Water & Land Advisory (“WWLA”) has prepared this Preliminary Site Investigation (“PSI”) to identify the presence of, and approval requirements relating to, ground contamination within the footprint of the Waihi North Project (“WNP”). The WNP area encompasses existing OceanaGold (New Zealand) Limited (“OGNZL”) Waihi-based facilities (Figure 1) as well as undeveloped land north of Waihi at Willows Road and in/under the Coromandel Forest Park. Figure 1 Existing Waihi-based mining and processing areas (image source: OGNZL). 1.1 Background and project description The WNP involves works across several discrete areas. This includes sites at and immediately around the existing OGNZL Waihi-based facilities and on largely undeveloped rural land northeast of Waihi. The locations and boundaries of the project components described above are shown on Figure 2. A full description of the project is available within the Project Description in the Assessment of Effects on the Environment provided to support the consent application for the proposed work2. Key features are summarised below: • A new Underground Mine at Wharekirauponga (within the Coromandel Forest Park; “WUG”). • Associated surface infrastructure at the Willows Road Farm and underground access to the existing Processing facilities at Waihi. • A new open pit mine named the Gladstone Open Pit (“GOP”) with associated works to enable future conversion to a tailings storage facility. • Construction of one temporary rock stack at Willows Road, and another at the Northern Rock Stack (“NRS”) near the existing Tailings Storage Facilities (“TSFs”). 2 Mitchell Daysh Limited, Waihi North Project – Resource Consent Applications and Assessment of Environmental Effects, dated June 2022 Martha Open Pit Tailings Storage Facilities Processing Plant & WTP Rock Stacks Favona Underground Portal Waihi
