Supporting Technical Assessments

June 2022 G-01483.84-017-R-Rev0 Because the 7 Fully cored boreholes were completed at various locations to investigate key elements of the tunnel and surface infrastructure. Borehole locations are presented in Figure 5, logs and core photographs have been prepared by GHD. Additional fully cored boreholes were completed to evaluate the ground conditions for tunnelling. The tunnel spoil has been characterized in this report from logs, photographs and unconfined compressive strength test results for WNDD007 and WNDD008, but description of the tunnelling conditions and logs and core photographs for those boreholes are not included in this report; they are included in Golder 2022. 5.1 Laboratory Soil and Rock Testing A range of laboratory tests were undertaken on soil and rock samples collected from test pits and boreholes on the Willows Road farm site. The objective of this laboratory testing was to evaluate the geomechanical properties of the shallow soils (weathered volcanic ash and residual soil of volcanic rock) and samples of rock to assess the potential impact of these materials on the project. This section summarises the testing programme and results. Seventeen samples were collected from test pits, boreholes, and drill core for laboratory soil testing and thirty-six samples were collected from two boreholes (WNDD007, WNDD008) for the laboratory rock testing.
