Site-specific Assessments of Environmental Effects

B-6 – Area 6 – Assessment of Environmental Effects 1 1. INTRODUCTION Area 6 is located on OceanaGold (New Zealand) Limited (“OGNZL”) owned land located immediately east of the Ohinemuri River, immediately south of Golden Valley Road, and immediately north of the existing tailings storage facility (“TSF”) 2. It will contain the proposed Northern Rock Stack (“NRS”) and a new explosives storage magazine. The NRS would accommodate surplus rock associated with the Waihi North Project, prior to its reuse for other purposes. The NRS will accommodate rock predominantly from the Gladstone Open Pit (“GOP”), which will be used to construct TSF3, construct and rehabilitate the in-pit TSF (also referred to as the “GOP TSF”) and backfill underground mine workings. The NRS may also store some development rock from the Wharekirauponga Underground Mine (“WUG”). Some rock will be left at the NRS at closure, however, it will be smaller than its maximum operating form. This sub-Assessment of Environmental Effects (“sub-AEE”) has been prepared in support of resource consent applications by OGNZL under the Resource Management Act 1991 (“RMA”) to authorise all necessary activities associated within Area 6. It comprises 8 sections as follows: Section 1: Is this Introduction. Section 2: Provides a description of the existing environment. Section 3: Provides a description of the proposed activities for which resource consent is sought. Section 4: Is an analysis of the resource consents required for the proposed activities under the RMA. Section 5: Provides an assessment of environmental effects associated with the proposed activities. Section 6 Outlines how the environmental effects of the proposed activities will be managed, including proposed conditions of consent. Section 7: Sets out the statutory framework against which the application has been made and is to be assessed, including an analysis of how it aligns with the key directives in the relevant planning documents. Section 8: Is a short concluding statement.
