Site-specific Assessments of Environmental Effects

B-1 - Area 1, Coromandel Forest Park – Assessment of Environmental Effects 26 2.4.13 Recreation The existing recreational values within Area 1 are described in Greenaway (2022), a copy of which is provided in Part H of these application documents. Te Wharekirauponga Track (north of the Wharekirauponga orebody) is used by trampers and runners entering from Parakiwai Quarry Road to the east (Figure 17). A directional pedestrian counter installed by OGNZL recorded 3,594 walkers heading south into the CFP and 4,140 heading north, towards the Parakiwai carpark (i.e., ‘out’ of the forest) during 2021. This is a daily average of 9.8 walkers heading south and 11.3 heading north. The higher count for those heading north is indicative of people completing circuits from connecting tracks in the Golden Cross and/or Wentworth valleys. Around 250 of the records can be attributed to OGNZL staff accessing existing drill sites when weather prevents helicopter access. Secondary tramping access into Area 1 is available from the south-east via private land (i.e., access permission would need to be obtained) and then via Corbett Road (a paper road) to Parakawai Track, crossing the Dual Tunnel alignment shown below in purple. This access is mainly used by local hunters and there is no consistent track. Figure 17: Tramping tracks around Wharekirauponga Valley (Greenaway 2022).
