Site-specific Assessments of Environmental Effects

B-2 – Area 2 - Assessment of Environmental Effects 67 GHD (2022) recommends monitoring of groundwater and surface water quality and quantity in and around the Willows SFA and WRS. This is provided for in the proposed conditions, which include requirements for additional baseline monitoring (for future effects to be assessed against), trigger levels, and a precautionary requirement to implement mitigation/contingency measures in the unlikely event they are required. 5.11 EFFECTS ON AQUATIC ECOLOGY An assessment of the potential effects of the Waihi North Project on freshwater ecology values is provided in Boffa Miskell (2022a), a copy of which is provided in Part H of these application documents. An overview Boffa Miskell’s key conclusions on the actual and potential effects of the proposed activities at Area 2, their recommended means of managing those effects, and the level of effect after management, is provided in Table 5. Further discussion on each element is provided below. Table 5: Overview of the level of effects resulting from the proposed Willows SFA. Feature Ecological Value Effect Magnitude of Effect Effects management Level of Effect after Management Tributary 2 Low Reclamation of 250 m of stream habitat High Offset with stream enhancement Very Low Instream works Low Fish salvage Very low Reduced aquatic connectivity Low Offset with stream enhancement Very low Mataura Stream High Earthworks and sediment discharge Low Settlement and treatment prior to discharge Low High Contaminant water management Low Treatment at WTP Low The proposed surface infrastructure will result in 250 m of stream length being lost. An offset is being proposed to redress the effects on stream ecological values arising from the loss of this stream area. The offset will deliver a no net loss outcome in stream ecological values.
