B-1 - Area 1, Coromandel Forest Park – Assessment of Environmental Effects 117 the need to ensure that aquifers are not over-allocated;89 any demonstrated return flow to the aquifer;90 whether surface water instream uses, values and flows (including springs) are adversely affected;91 where sustainable yields have not been set in Table 3-6 potential for loss of recharge to other aquifers;92 where sustainable yields have not been set in Table 3-6 potential adverse effects from aquifer compaction and ground surface subsidence;93 potential for contamination of ground or surface water;94 potential for interference effects on neighbouring bores;95 possible monitoring methods;96 demonstration that physical access to the water does not adversely affect any other land and/or property owner;97 and the nature of hydraulic connection (if any) between the groundwater resource from which water is proposed to be taken and surface waterbodies.98 The dual tunnel and associated mining area is not located within any specific aquifer management areas within the WRP. It is therefore assumed that the take is from the Otahu Catchment. This catchment is not currently subject to a sustainable yield or management level in accordance with Table 3-6 of the WRP and therefore, groundwater availability for the catchment has been identified in liaison with WRC and assessed by GWS (2022b). . The rationale for the abstraction of groundwater within Area 1 is explained in Section 3 of this AEE, while the actual and potential effects of the abstraction of groundwater (and how these will be managed) are discussed in Section 5 of this AEE. In particular, it is noted that the abstraction of groundwater is necessary to provide safe access to the mineral resources and that there are no alternative options to this approach within Area 1. The groundwater take is also within the groundwater availability calculated for this catchment. Further, it is concluded that the abstraction of groundwater will not have any discernible 89 Policy 12(k), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 90 Policy 12(l), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 91 Policy 12(m), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 92 Policy 12(p), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 93 Policy 12(o), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 94 Policy 12(q), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 95 Policy 12(r), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 96 Policy 12(u), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 97 Policy 12(v), of the Waikato Regional Plan. 98 Policy 12(w), of the Waikato Regional Plan.
