Site-specific Assessments of Environmental Effects

B-1 - Area 1, Coromandel Forest Park – Assessment of Environmental Effects 110 The maintenance or enhancement of the qualities and characteristics of areas and features valued for their contribution to amenity; 43 and The protection of the natural character of wetlands, lakes and rivers and their margins from the adverse effects of inappropriate use and development.44 The associated policies direct that the values and characteristics of outstanding natural landscapes are protected adverse effects arising from inappropriate use and development,45 activities within wetlands, rivers and their margins are appropriate in relation to the level of natural character at those locations46 and that amenity values are identified, maintained and enhanced.47 In accordance with these key themes: CFP is recognised as an outstanding natural landscape. With the exception of four isolated ventilation shaft vents located on legal road reserve, the WUG is located beneath the CFP. The sensitive siting of these features within the extensive homogenous forest cover and their comparably diminutive scale will ensure the characteristics and values of the outstanding natural landscape are protected;48 there is an inherent functional requirement for the WUG and its associated activities to locate where the ore body is located;49 potential natural character effects on the rivers, wetlands and their margins have been avoided through the WUG generating no direct or physical modification of waterbodies within CFP;50 and, indirect effects on natural character may arise from the loss of a single warm spring within the Wharekirauponga Stream catchment. As described in Section 5.5 of this AEE, the potential natural character effects associated with the loss of this spring are insignificant.51 The activities within Area 1 will therefore be managed to ensure the outstanding landscape and natural character values of CFP are protected and the activities undertaken within it are not inappropriate within this environmental context. 43 Objective 3.21 of the Waikato Regional Policy Statement 44 Objective 3.20 of the Waikato Regional Policy Statement 45 Policy 12.1, of the Waikato Regional Policy Statement. 46 Policy 12.2, of the Waikato Regional Policy Statement. 47 Policy 12.3, of the Waikato Regional Policy Statement. 48 Objective 3.20 and associated Policy 12.1, Waikato Regional Policy Statement. 49 Policy 12.2(e), Waikato Regional Policy Statement. 50 Policy 12.2(a), Waikato Regional Policy Statement. 51 Objective 3.20 and associated Policy 12.1, Waikato Regional Policy Statement.
