With the above measures in place, the positive indigenous biodiversity outcomes achieved are such that the ecosystem’s health and ongoing functioning is provided for in accordance with Objective 3.19. 7.5.1.4 Historic and Cultural Heritage Objective 3.18 of the RPS specifies that sites, structures, landscapes, areas or places of historic and cultural heritage are to be protected, maintained or enhanced in order to retain the identity and integrity of the Waikato Region and New Zealand’s history and culture. A number of policies seek to achieve this objective, and direct that: Tangata whenua are to be provided appropriate opportunities to express, maintain and enhance the relationship with their rohe through resource management and other local authority processes;39 Provision should be made for the collaborative, consistent and integrated management of historic and cultural heritage resources; and40 Use and development should be managed to give recognition to historic and cultural heritage and to integrate it with development where appropriate.41 The provisions of the RPS regarding the relationship of tangata whenua with their cultural heritage are addressed in Section 5 of the Overarching AEE. Section 5.13 of this AEE describes the proximity of the ventilation shafts to the Royal Standard Battery. In summary however, the activities occurring in association with the WUG, including the positioning of the proposed ventilation shafts, will not disturb this archaeological feature. Accordingly, the activities occurring within Area 1 are consistent with the outcomes sought by Objective 3.18. 7.5.1.5 Landscape, Natural Character and Amenity Objectives 3.20, 3.21 and 3.22 of the RPS relate to the management outcomes expected for landscapes, natural character and amenity.
