Site-specific Assessments of Environmental Effects

B-7 – Area 7 - Assessment of Environmental Effects 124 7.6.1.9 Contaminated Land Objective 5.3.2 and its associated policies183 manage the discharges of contaminants from contaminated land so they: do not present significant risk to human health, flora or fauna due to the contamination of soil and ground or surface water; do not have adverse effects on water quality or aquatic ecosystems that are inconsistent with the water management objectives in Section 3.1.2; do not generate adverse effects on air quality that are inconsistent with air quality objectives in Section 6.1.2; and avoid significant adverse effects and remedy or mitigate adverse effects on the relationship that tangata whenua as Kaitiaki have with their identified taonga. Area 7 has historically been used and occupied by farming activities, as detailed in Section 2 of this AEE. Aspects of farming (like chemical storage and application) are included on the Ministry for the Environment HAIL list. All soil disturbance activities undertaken within the identified HAIL areas described in Section 2 will be managed in accordance with the SMP recommended by WWLA (2022). With the SMP in place, it is anticipated that the potential risk to human health and the environment will be appropriately managed in accordance with this objective. On closure of the mine, Area 7 will be rehabilitated in line with the closure plan. As described in section 3.4 of this AEE and Section 7.10 of the Overarching AEE, this land will be reverted to pastoral use. Confirmation of the appropriate future land use activities enabled on the site will be informed however, by future monitoring and site investigations on-site. In light of the above, discharges of contaminants from contaminated land within the site will therefore be managed so they do not present significant risk to human health, flora or fauna due to the contamination of soil and ground or surface water, do not have adverse effects on water quality or aquatic ecosystems, or do not generate adverse effects on air quality that are inconsistent with air quality objectives. As previously noted, OGNZL continues to work with tangata whenua regarding cultural effects and how the project can best accommodate and provide for their relationship with identified taonga. This is considered further in Section 5 of the Overarching AEE. 183 Policies 1 – 4, Section 5.3, Waikato Regional Plan.
